Quote of the Day
Many of you have seen this quote, but every day it seems more and more relevant :
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
-Pastor Martin Niemoller

Excuse my ignorance if I ask who he was?
Actually Niemoller was not a good guy at all. He was passionately Christian, but extremely anti-semitic, so much so that he worked along with Hitler. He finally realized all was not right with these Nazis, and ended up in Dachau himself. Read the rest in Wikipedia.
Hi Jim
Once again you've prompted me to deep thought. :)
While the quote you mention is poignant and thought provoking, my own thoughts are that the people who speak for me I vote for and elect. Should they stop speaking for me, I vote for someone else. So far I haven't had to change my vote.
I hope I haven't missed your point.
Cheers
Findlay
The people you passionately believe in and vote for don't always get elected. You may end up with an ignorant, elitist oil man who starts worse than useless, preemptive wars to advance his own political capital. The point is, speak out if it's wrong, even if it doesn't always immediately affect you.
